Brief Introduction

The College of Agriculture was established in November 1932. At present it has 1 laboratory centre and 5 departments, namely the Department of Agriculture Science, Department of Horticulture, Department of Plant Protection, Department of Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science, Department of Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science.

 

It offers 4 undergraduate programs: agriculture, horticulture, plant protection and agricultural resources and environmental science. At present, it has a total number of 175 full-time faculties, including 117 full-time teachers (69 with PhD), which includes 38 professors, 49 associate professors, 16 doctoral supervisors. In 2011, the College enrolled 490 students, 165 of which are postgraduate students (28 doctoral students and 137 Master of Science students) and 325 are undergraduate students, including 6 international students. At present, there are 3,523 students in total, 635 of who are postgraduate students (75 Chinese doctoral students and 6 overseas doctoral students): 368 master of science students (including 7 international students) and 186 professional master students (including 2 international students). There are also 1,229 undergraduate students and 1,800 continuing education students. The college’s teaching and research base covers over 300 Mu and its equipment’s total value is worth 35 million yuan. In addition, the reference room has more than 3,000 books on various subjects and more than 50 domestic and foreign paper journals.

Staff

It has 175 faculty, including 17 administrative staffs, 42 supporting staffs and 117 full-time teachers. Among full-time teachers, there are 38 professors, 49 associate professors, 3 doctoral supervisors and 69 teachers with Ph.D.

Recently, the College has strengthened the construction of teaching team. It has sent many teachers to USA, Australia, Britain, France, Japan and other foreign countries for further studies and cooperative researches and introduced young talents. In the past two years, it has introduced over 20 teachers with Ph.D. and master degree, therefore the teaching and researching team has been strengthened gradually.

Postgraduate Management

The College manages in accordance with relevant provisions in the Guangxi University Postgraduate Handbook and the Guangxi University Student Handbook for postgraduate’s academic credentials, cultivation, assessment, thesis oral defense as well as daily behavior. Admission

In 2011, there were 165 postgraduate students enrolled, including 28 doctoral students and 137 master students.

Currently, there are 635 postgraduate students, including 81 doctoral students (6 international doctoral students), 368 master of science students (7 international master of science students), and 186 professional master students (2 international professional master students).

 

Postgraduate Programs

The College offers the following programs: 4 first-level disciplines including Crop Science, Horticulture and Plant Protection, 13 secondary disciplines including Phytology, Crop Cultivation and Farming System, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Fruit Science, Vegetable Science, Protected Horticulture, Phytopathology, Agricultural Entomology and Pest Control, Pesticide Science, Sericology, Pedology, Plant Nutrition and Environmental Ecology, master programs of agriculture extension in 9 areas including Crops, Horticulture, Agricultural Resources, Plant Protection, Rural and Regional Development, Agricultural Science and Technology Organization and Services, Agriculture Informatization, Facility Agriculture and Seed Science.

 

Cultivation and Management

The College, focusing on discipline construction with “211 Project” as the carrier, continues to increase the intensity of discipline construction to enhance their distinctive characteristics. The overall level has been greatly upgraded with some subjects enjoying high reputations in similar subjects and some of the research fields reaching advanced level in the country.

 

Research

During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, the College has undertaken 418 longitudinal research projects, more than 30 of which were national projects, including National Natural Science Foundation projects. It received a total scientific research fund of over 50 million. It built a public platform for scientific research and was granted by the Ministry of Agriculture with a qualification of registered vegetable pesticide residue test. Besides, it has gained tremendous achievements in scientific research. More than 45 kinds of crops like, rice, vegetable, cassava and bast fiber crops were accredited by related departments during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period. Its “wild type hybrid rice with self-restoring ability series, combination breeding and its promotion and application” won first prize of Award of Chinese Agricultural Science and Technology. Achievements in other disciplines were awarded with two second class prizes and seven third class prizes of Award of Guangxi Science and Technology Progress. 1420 theses have been published, of which 588 are published in core journals, 116 are included in the top three index service, and 54 works are published.  

It has held several academic exchange meetings and invited scholars and experts to lecture and exchange views here which have broadened the teachers and students’ horizon. Besides, the college has signed general cooperation agreement with Baise National Agricultural Sci-Tech Zone, cooperated with Wuming County to construct New Countryside demonstration site at Liangjiang town, established school-enterprise cooperation with Hepu branch of Asia Lucky Team Science & Technology, successively built an industrial system innovation alliance of three fields: oranges and tangerines, mango and edible mushroom with the college playing a leading role, conducted science and technology cooperation with America, Japan, Australia, and ASEAN countries. Its cooperation and communication with ASEAN countries are increasing. In recent years, its research and teaching base has attracted 6 to 8 delegations from abroad and more than 10 from home every year.
